The Wasps Trust – Supporting Scotland's Artists

The Wasps Studio used to be the home of the old Fish Market (which in its day was a very popular place to buy fresh fish). However, when the Fish Market ceased to trade the Wasps Studio took over and made it into a large-scale artists studio.

The Mickel Fund Trustees were tasked with supporting several projects through their Major Donation funding and The Wasps Studio was felt to be a very worthy cause. The trustees of the Mickel Fund were very pleased to be given the opportunity to visit the Wasps Studio in October to see first hand how their funding has assisted this venture.

Now with a 30-year track record, Wasps has grown to become one of the largest studio providers in the UK with a network of 17 buildings from the Scottish Borders to the Shetland Islands.

The Wasps Trust which is one of Scotland’s largest arts organisations - supporting, sustaining and developing the country’s vibrant arts community. Formed as a charity in 1993, The Wasps Trust works alongside Wasps Artists’ Studios to acquire, redevelop and manage affordable workspaces for artists and the cultural community.

A representative for the Wasps Trust said “The Mickel Fund money allowed us to restore and transform the historic Briggait fish market in Glasgow into a new home for over 80 artists and arts charities. The building, which had been lying neglected and underused for the best part of 20 years, is now a vibrant new creative space for the city. Thank you Mickel Fund!”
